High-traffic routes

Pick a popular route and we’ll auto-fill distance plus the January 2026 typical time & price range from your spreadsheet. Then we estimate CO₂e using adjustable factors. Save favorites and revisit later.

Quick actions
Strict mode: refresh between scenarios
Step 1: Select a route above to enable “Run scenario”.
1) Choose a route
Don’t know the distance? Choose from the dropdown — we fill it automatically.

Step 1: Choose a high-traffic route from the dropdown.
Step 2: (Optional) open Advanced options for preferences & buffers.
Step 3: Click Run scenario (top right) to see time, price, and CO₂e.
If you create a custom route, enter your best estimate (road or flight).
We’ll choose road distance for train/bus and flight distance for planes.
Advanced options (optional) Preference: Balanced Buffers: Off
These settings influence the “Best fit” recommendation and make times more realistic (door-to-door).
0 = fastest
100 = lowest CO₂e
Door-to-door buffers
Add access + processing time so flight becomes door-to-door (D2D).
Tip: Flight 30–60 access + 60–90 security + 15–30 arrival. Rail buffer 10–20.
4) Results
Time + price come from your spreadsheet when available. CO₂e is estimated from factors (editable in code).

Note: When a mode is not listed for a route in your dataset, time/price/operators are shown as estimates (labeled “est.” / “typical”).

Methodology

Time and price are shown as typical one-way ranges from our route dataset (Jan 2026) and are intended to reflect common booking conditions rather than rare flash sales. Time ranges are presented as door-to-door estimates when optional buffers are enabled (airport access, security/boarding, and arrival time). CO₂e is an estimate based on distance and standard per-passenger emission factors, with an optional multiplier to reflect high-altitude impacts for flights. Where a mode is not covered in the dataset for a specific route, the tool displays clearly labeled estimates (“est.” / “typical”). All outputs are designed for comparison and decision-making, not to predict the exact outcome of any individual trip.

Sources & next steps

For full transparency, you can verify our emissions assumptions using the official UK Government 2025 GHG conversion factors, cross-check flight CO₂ with the ICAO Carbon Emissions Calculator, and explore why aviation warming impact isn’t only CO₂ (contrails/NOx) in the EASA/European Commission non-CO₂ report. Next, browse the Comparisons Hub for route-by-route breakdowns, read our Train vs Flight overview, use the Train–Flight Decision Framework to choose faster, cheaper, or lower-carbon options, and try the Carbon Calculator for custom routes. If you’re planning the full trip, estimate accommodation and local transport impact in the Hotel + Transportation guide.
