Train operators on this route

Three operators run high-speed trains between Paris and Lyon in 2026, offering different trade-offs between price, comfort and flexibility.

TGV INOUI
Premium high-speed · SNCF

Full-service TGV with WiFi, power sockets, bar carriage and first/second class. Most flexible fares and best onboard comfort. Tickets from ~€25 advance. Departs Paris Gare de Lyon.

OUIGO
Budget high-speed · SNCF

Same TGV speed, lower price. Strict luggage rules (one small bag in base fare). From €19 advance — cheapest option on this corridor. Check departure station carefully — sometimes Marne-la-Vallée or Bercy.

Frecciarossa
High-speed · Trenitalia

Italy's Trenitalia runs Paris–Lyon since December 2021. Competitive fares and high comfort. Worth checking alongside SNCF for Business or Executive class options.

2026 note: SNCF is rolling out its next-generation TGV on the Paris–Lyon corridor with 20% more capacity. Always check sncf-connect.com for updated schedules.

Door-to-door time model

Line-haul time does not tell you which mode is faster. This model — consistent with our Odyssey Discoveries methodology — adds every realistic step each mode requires. The same model powers our Time Optimizer Tool for Iberia routes.

Carbon comparison

French rail runs on a ~90% low-carbon grid (nuclear + renewables), making the TGV one of Europe's most sustainable intercity options. Use our Carbon Calculator to estimate CO₂e for any Iberia route using the same methodology.

🚄 TGV train~3 kg CO₂e per passenger
3 kg
✈️ Flight (economy)~28 kg CO₂e per passenger
28 kg
Why such a large gap? Short-haul flights burn disproportionately more fuel per km due to takeoff and landing. France's grid is ~90% low-carbon. On this 393 km route, flying emits roughly 9× more CO₂e than the TGV. Source: ADEME Base Carbone / EcoPassenger methodology — the same sources behind our Carbon Calculator.

Traveler scenarios

How the choice plays out for different types of travelers. These scenarios follow the same logic as our Iberia Travel Impact Routes analysis.

💼

Business traveler, Paris centre → Lyon meeting

Needs reliability, city-centre arrival, ability to work en route. Train is clear choice — no airport friction, power sockets, arrives Part-Dieu in the heart of the business district.

🚄 Train
👨‍👩‍👧

Family with children and luggage

Airport security with children adds significant stress and time. Train allows free luggage, no security queue, and a relaxed departure from a central Paris station.

🚄 Train
🎒

Budget traveler, flexible dates

OUIGO from €19 beats almost any flight when you include bag fees and airport transfers. Book 6+ weeks ahead. Check OUIGO departure station — sometimes Marne-la-Vallée.

🚄 Train
🌿

Sustainable traveler

The TGV emits ~9× less CO₂e than flying on this route. For anyone tracking travel carbon, the train is the only serious choice. Check our Carbon Calculator for Iberia equivalents.

🚄 Train
✈️

International connection at CDG

CDG has its own TGV station — connect directly to Lyon without entering Paris. Allow at least 3 hours between flight landing and TGV departure. Use our Connection Risk Tool to assess your layover.

⚠️ Plan carefully

Last-minute same-day booking

Flexible TGV fares can reach €80–120 on the day but trains run every 20–30 min peak — you're rarely stuck. Flights are often pricier last-minute and slower door-to-door.

For peak summer (July–Aug), book when SNCF schedule opens — typically 4 months ahead. Prems fares sell out fast in those months.

Common mistakes on this route

1

Comparing line-haul time, not door-to-door

Flight: 1h05 in the air. Train: 1h48. But door-to-door the train is ~1 hour faster once airport transfers and check-in are added. Always compare total journey time — use our Time Optimizer Tool for Iberia routes.

2

Missing a CDG TGV connection after a late flight

Allow at least 3 hours between your flight's scheduled landing and TGV departure at CDG. Cheap TGV tickets are non-refundable. Use our Connection Risk Tool to assess any tight connection.

3

Booking OUIGO without reading the luggage rules

OUIGO base fares include only one small bag. A second bag costs extra — sometimes making TGV INOUI better overall value when luggage is factored in.

4

Assuming all Paris train stations are the same

TGV INOUI to Lyon departs from Paris Gare de Lyon. Some OUIGO services depart from Marne-la-Vallée–Chessy (30 min from central Paris on RER A) or Paris Bercy. Always check your specific ticket.

5

Booking a non-flexible TGV then missing it

Prems and low-cost TGV fares are non-exchangeable and non-refundable. If your plans may change, book a Flex fare or cover yourself with travel insurance that includes train tickets.

FAQ: Paris to Lyon train vs flight

Tap a question to expand it — only one answer stays open at a time.

No. France banned the Paris–Lyon air route in 2023 as part of legislation eliminating short-haul domestic flights where a train alternative exists under 2.5 hours. The TGV is now the only practical intercity transport option on this corridor. Paris–Lyon was already a rail-dominant route before the ban, with rail carrying roughly ten times more passengers than air travel.

Approximately 2 hours from Paris Gare de Lyon to Lyon Part-Dieu, running at up to 300 km/h. Depending on your specific departure and whether it's a direct TGV or one that stops at intermediate stations, journey times range from around 1h 55min to 2h 20min — check your exact train rather than assuming the fastest headline time. Even before the flight ban, the TGV was already the faster door-to-door option: a flight's ~1h05 in the air was offset by 40–60 minutes to the airport, 75–90 minutes of check-in and security, and another 25–35 minutes into central Lyon, pushing total flight time past 3h 45m versus roughly 2h 45m door-to-door by train.

SNCF releases the cheapest fares — including Ouigo low-cost TGV services — months in advance. Booking directly via the SNCF app or website, or through Trainline, as soon as your dates are confirmed gives you the best chance of the lowest fares. Ouigo fares can start from as little as €10–19 but sell out quickly. Standard TGV INOUI fares are more flexible for changes and refunds but cost more.

Ouigo is SNCF's low-cost TGV brand. It is cheaper but departs from lower-cost terminals at Paris Gare de Lyon, enforces a strict one small bag free policy (larger bags cost extra), and offers fewer onboard amenities. TGV INOUI departs from main platforms, has a more generous luggage policy, includes a complimentary service on longer journeys, and allows more flexible change and refund options. For budget travelers packing light, Ouigo is excellent value. For families, business travelers, or those with luggage, TGV INOUI is the more practical choice.

If you have a paper ticket, yes — you must stamp it at the yellow validation machines (composteurs) on the platform before boarding. Failure to validate can result in an on-board fine. If you have a fully digital e-ticket displayed in the SNCF app, validation at the machine is not required. When in doubt, validate.

TGV INOUI and Frecciarossa depart from Paris Gare de Lyon, the main departure station for Lyon. Ouigo services also use Paris Gare de Lyon but may operate from a different hall — and some Ouigo services depart from Marne-la-Vallée–Chessy (30 min from central Paris on RER A) or Paris Bercy instead, so always check your specific ticket. Lyon Part-Dieu is the main arrival station in Lyon and is well connected by metro and tram.

Roughly every 20–30 minutes during peak hours, combining TGV INOUI, OUIGO and Frecciarossa — typically 30–40 departures per day. That's far more flexible than any daily flight schedule ever offered on this route.

Yes — CDG has its own TGV station on the high-speed line. You can take a TGV directly to Lyon without entering Paris. Allow at least 3 hours between your flight's scheduled landing and TGV departure. Use our Connection Risk Tool to assess whether your layover is realistic.

Yes. The roughly 2-hour journey and frequent TGV departures throughout the day make Paris–Lyon practical for a day trip in either direction. Lyon is one of France's most rewarding food and culture destinations and is easily explored in a day from Paris.

Significantly. France's TGV network runs on a largely low-carbon electricity grid (~90% nuclear and renewables), and with no flight option remaining on this corridor, the train is both the only practical choice and one of the most efficient intercity journeys in Europe by emissions per passenger. Before the ban, the TGV emitted an estimated ~3 kg CO₂e per passenger versus ~28 kg for the equivalent flight — roughly 9× more. Paris–Lyon is frequently cited as a benchmark for what a mature high-speed rail corridor can achieve in replacing domestic aviation.
