France Routes: Train vs Flight
France has some of Europe's clearest — and most debated — train vs flight decisions. The TGV network connects Paris to every major city faster door-to-door than flying on most corridors. One route has had flights banned. One route is Europe's most searched international rail journey. And one is a genuine debate. Five complete route comparisons using the same door-to-door methodology we apply across all Odyssey Discoveries route guides.

ToggleHow to use these route comparisons
Every route comparison uses the same door-to-door framework — total time from city centre to city centre, not just the flight or train ticket time. The same methodology powers the Time Optimizer Tool and Iberia route comparisons.
Start with the right question
Don't compare ticket prices. Compare door-to-door time and total cost — including airport transfers, check-in buffer, boarding, landing and exit on both sides. Our Airport Transfer Penalty Tool models this for any route.
Check your departure and arrival points
Paris has two major airports (CDG and Orly) both 40–60 min from the centre. TGV stations are central. Your starting and ending point dramatically affects which mode wins. Always check both ends of the journey.
Factor in carbon and total cost
French TGVs run on ~90% low-carbon electricity. The CO₂e gap vs flying is among the largest in Europe. Always compare total door-to-door cost including transfers — not just the ticket. Use our Carbon Calculator and Cost Comparison Tool for Iberia equivalents.

Why France is Europe's best case for train travel
Three factors make France the continent's most compelling high-speed rail market — and the best starting point for understanding the train vs flight decision.
The TGV network spans the whole country
France's TGV (Train à Grande Vitesse) network connects Paris to every major city at up to 320 km/h. The high-speed lines mean Paris–Lyon takes under 2 hours, Paris–Bordeaux just over 2 hours, and even Paris–Marseille at 775 km takes only 3h 04m. The network is the backbone of French domestic travel — and increasingly international.
French electricity is ~90% low-carbon
France's electricity grid runs on approximately 90% nuclear and renewables. This makes the TGV one of the lowest-carbon forms of intercity transport in the world — emitting as little as 0.5–11 kg CO₂e per passenger on the routes covered here, compared to 28–122 kg by air. The carbon case for taking the train in France is among the strongest in Europe.
Stations are city centre; airports are not
Every TGV departure and arrival point in this hub is a city-centre station — Paris Gare de Lyon, Paris Montparnasse, Paris Gare du Nord, Lyon Part-Dieu, Marseille St Charles, Bordeaux St Jean, Nice-Ville, London St Pancras. French airports are all 20–60 minutes outside city centres, creating a structural advantage for the train that compounds with every journey.

FAQ: France train vs flight
Which France route has the strongest case for the train?
Paris–Bordeaux is arguably the strongest case — the TGV takes just 2h 08m, France legally banned flights from Orly on this route, and the train emits ~18x less CO₂e. Paris–Lyon is a close second — the train is ~1 hour faster door-to-door and runs every 20–30 minutes. See the full Paris → Bordeaux comparison and Paris → Lyon comparison.
Is there any France route where flying makes sense?
Paris–Nice is the only route in this hub where flying genuinely competes on time — door-to-door times are similar at around 5–6 hours. Flying may also make sense if you're connecting from an international flight at CDG, or if last-minute Eurostar/TGV prices are very high. See the Paris → Nice full comparison for the honest breakdown.
Why did France ban domestic flights?
France banned flights from Paris Orly to Bordeaux, Lyon and Nantes in 2023 — routes where train alternatives take under 2.5 hours. The Orly–Bordeaux ban was the most significant: the TGV takes just 2h 08m and the flight emits approximately 18x more CO₂e. The government's analysis showed the Orly ban alone would cut 55,000 tonnes of CO₂ annually. See the full story in the Paris → Bordeaux comparison.
What is the cheapest way to travel Paris to major French cities by train?
OUIGO is SNCF's budget high-speed brand with fares from €19 advance on most corridors including Lyon, Bordeaux, Marseille and Nice. Book 6–8 weeks ahead for the best prices. TGV INOUI Prems fares start from ~€25. Always check the departure station for OUIGO services — some depart from suburban stations rather than central Paris. See each route page for specific booking guidance.
How does the France route methodology compare to the Iberia methodology?
All France routes use the same Odyssey Discoveries door-to-door methodology applied to Iberia routes. Total time = city transfer + station/airport buffer + line-haul + exit + city transfer at destination. Flight times include realistic airport transfers for both Paris airports (CDG and Orly) — not just the flight itself. See the route assumptions page for full details.
Is the Eurostar the same as a TGV?
No — the Eurostar and TGV are separate services, though both use high-speed rail. The Eurostar is operated by Eurostar International and runs through the Channel Tunnel between London St Pancras and Paris Gare du Nord (and beyond to Brussels and Amsterdam). TGV services are operated by SNCF within France. Both use high-speed tracks at up to 300–320 km/h. See the full London → Paris Eurostar comparison.
