Green Key in Seville

Seville is one of Spain's most visited cities, receiving over 2.8 million tourists annually. Green Key in Spain is administered by ADEAC (known locally as Llave Verde), which has operated the programme in Spain since 2013 under the Foundation for Environmental Education (FEE).

Andalucía's Sustainability Context

The Junta de Andalucía's SICTED (Integral System for Quality Tourism in Spanish Destinations) operates alongside Green Key across Seville. Several certified venues hold dual recognition under both programmes — a pattern specific to Andalucía's regional tourism governance.

UNESCO & Heritage Overlay

Seville's historic centre, Alcázar, and Cathedral form a UNESCO World Heritage Site (1987). Several Green Key certified venues are located within or adjacent to the heritage zone, creating a unique intersection of conservation obligations and sustainability certification requirements.

Governance Context

Seville's Green Key landscape is shaped by Spain's national operator ADEAC, Andalucía's regional tourism quality framework, and a UNESCO heritage overlay that affects how several certified venues approach sustainability. Understanding all three layers is key to interpreting this dataset.

International Level
Foundation for Environmental Education (FEE)
Green Key is governed by the Foundation for Environmental Education, headquartered in Copenhagen. FEE sets the global criteria framework — currently valid 2022–2026 and GSTC-recognised. A revised criteria cycle aligning with ISO standards and the EU Green Transition Directive takes effect from October 1, 2026.
National Level — Spain
ADEAC — Llave Verde
ADEAC (Asociación de Educación Ambiental y del Consumidor) is the official FEE national operator for Spain, operating Green Key as "Llave Verde" since 2013. ADEAC conducts on-site audits, issues annual certificates, and manages the programme across all Spanish regions including Andalucía.
Regional Level — Andalucía
SICTED & Junta de Andalucía Tourism Quality
The Junta de Andalucía operates the SICTED (Integral System for Quality Tourism in Spanish Destinations) programme across Seville. Green Key and SICTED are complementary: SICTED covers destination-wide service quality while Green Key focuses on environmental sustainability. Several Seville venues hold both.
Local Context — Seville
UNESCO Heritage Zone & Smart City Initiatives
Seville's Cathedral, Alcázar, and Archivo de Indias are UNESCO World Heritage listed (1987). The city also has active Smart City and low-emission zone initiatives — Seville was the first Spanish city to implement a large-scale urban LEZ. Green Key certified venues near the heritage core must balance environmental operations with preservation requirements.
Dataset Scope Note

This dataset covers venues with verified Green Key certification as administered by ADEAC Spain. Venues holding only EcoStars, SICTED, ISO 14001, or Biosphere-level certifications are not included unless they also hold Green Key. The Meliá and Gran Meliá properties in this dataset are EarthCheck + EcoStars certified — they are included where Green Key (Llave Verde / ADEAC) certification has also been verified.

Green Key Criteria Areas

All 13 criteria areas assessed during the annual certification audit. Establishments must meet all imperative requirements and a minimum number of guideline criteria that increases with years of participation. Current framework valid 2022–2026; updated criteria take effect October 2026.
