Algarve — 66 Certified in 2025

The Algarve is Portugal's third most Green Key certified region with 66 venues in 2025 — behind only Greater Lisbon (91) and Madeira (78). The region accounts for a disproportionate share of Portugal's international tourists, receiving approximately 12 million visitors annually and generating over 40% of Portuguese tourism revenue.

Turismo do Algarve & ABAAE

Green Key in Portugal is administered by ABAAE. The regional tourism authority, Turismo do Algarve, actively promotes Green Key certification — its president called the 65 awards in 2025 "concrete proof of the persistent work of our units in investing in good environmental practices."

Ria Formosa & Natural Park Context

Several certified venues are located adjacent to the Ria Formosa Natural Park — a 60km coastal lagoon system and Ramsar-designated wetland. Green Key venues near the park face heightened environmental scrutiny, making certification particularly relevant to conservation efforts in one of Portugal's most ecologically sensitive coastal zones.

Governance Context

The Algarve's Green Key landscape is shaped by a distinctive set of factors not seen in any other dataset in this series: a resort-dominated hospitality market, proximity to sensitive natural protected areas, and a regional tourism authority that actively co-promotes certification as part of a destination sustainability strategy.

International Level
Foundation for Environmental Education (FEE)
Green Key is governed by the Foundation for Environmental Education, headquartered in Copenhagen. FEE sets the global criteria framework — currently valid 2022–2026 and GSTC-recognised. A revised criteria cycle aligning with ISO standards and the EU Green Transition Directive takes effect October 1, 2026.
National Level — Portugal
ABAAE & Turismo de Portugal
ABAAE has coordinated Green Key in Portugal since 2007 through a 19-member National Commission. Turismo de Portugal participates as a National Jury member. In 2025, Portugal awarded 377 Green Key certificates — up 52 from the prior cycle. The Algarve alone accounted for 66 of these.
Regional Level — Algarve
Turismo do Algarve & RTA
The Algarve Tourism Region (RTA) is the regional authority responsible for promoting the Algarve as a sustainable destination. Its president publicly endorsed the 2025 Green Key results, positioning certification as central to the region's strategy of being "a destination that respects the environment, values its natural resources, and offers responsible experiences."
Protected Areas Context
Ria Formosa Natural Park & Ramsar Wetlands
The Ria Formosa Natural Park is a 60km coastal lagoon system stretching from Faro to Tavira, designated a Ramsar wetland site and home to 200+ bird species. Several Green Key certified venues near or within this zone must meet heightened environmental standards covering wastewater treatment, noise, and marine ecosystem impact — an additional layer not present in urban city datasets.
Dataset Scope Note

This dataset covers a curated selection of verified Green Key certified venues across the Algarve region. The full regional total is 66 venues (2025 edition). This dataset focuses on hotels, resorts, a conference centre, and restaurants with verified ABAAE certification. It does not include campsites, local accommodation (alojamento local), or guesthouses unless specifically noted. All 9 AP Hotels & Resorts Algarve properties hold Group-level Green Key certification as of October 2025.
