European Green Capital 2024

Valencia was named European Green Capital 2024 by the European Commission — the second Spanish city after Vitoria (2012) and the first in the Mediterranean. The award recognises Valencia's commitment to climate neutrality by 2030, its 9km Turia Garden, and its sustainable food and mobility systems.

Green Key in the Comunitat Valenciana

Green Key in Spain is administered by ADEAC (Llave Verde) since 2013 under FEE. The Comunitat Valenciana is one of 7 Spanish autonomous communities with all 4 ADEAC programmes active — a sign of deep regional engagement with environmental certification.

Climate Neutrality by 2030

Valencia was one of 112 cities selected for the EU Cities Mission, targeting climate neutrality by 2030. Green Key certified venues contribute to this goal through annual audited reductions in energy, water, and waste — making Valencia's hospitality sector directly measurable against the city's EU targets.

Governance Context

Valencia's Green Key landscape is shaped by a uniquely layered governance structure — more complex than any other city in this series. Green Key operates within Spain's ADEAC framework, the Comunitat Valenciana's regional sustainability policy, and Valencia's own EU-mandated climate neutrality commitments as European Green Capital 2024.

International Level
Foundation for Environmental Education (FEE)
Green Key is governed by the Foundation for Environmental Education, headquartered in Copenhagen. FEE sets the global criteria framework — currently valid 2022–2026 and GSTC-recognised. A revised criteria cycle aligning with ISO standards and the EU Green Transition Directive takes effect October 1, 2026.
National Level — Spain
ADEAC — Llave Verde
ADEAC (Asociación de Educación Ambiental y del Consumidor) is Spain's FEE national operator since 2013. It administers Green Key as "Llave Verde", conducts on-site audits, and issues annual certificates. The Comunitat Valenciana is one of 7 Spanish regions with all 4 ADEAC programmes active — a high level of regional engagement.
EU Level — Unique to Valencia
European Green Capital 2024 & EU Cities Mission
Valencia is the European Green Capital 2024 — the second Spanish city after Vitoria (2012) and the first in the Mediterranean. It is also one of 112 cities in the EU Cities Mission, targeting climate neutrality by 2030. No other city in this dataset series holds this designation, making Valencia's Green Key certified venues directly accountable to EU-level climate targets.
City Level — Valencia
Fundació València Clima i Energia & Sustainable Tourism Strategy
Valencia's sustainability infrastructure includes the Fundació València Clima i Energia, which coordinates the city's energy transition and carbon reduction programmes. Valencia was also named Capital of Sustainable Urban Food 2017 and Capital of Smart Tourism 2022, building a multi-decade sustainability record that Green Key certified venues operate within.
Dataset Scope Note

This dataset covers venues with verified Green Key (Llave Verde / ADEAC) certification in Valencia. It does not include venues with only ISO 14001, Biosphere, or EarthCheck certification. Given Valencia's status as European Green Capital 2024, several venues hold multiple concurrent sustainability certifications — where dual certification has been verified, this is noted in the key sustainability feature column.
